Optimization Tips

Optimizing Laptop Battery Life

There are many things that can drain your laptop of precious battery life but they can all be thrown into three broad categories: screen, peripherals/hard disks and wireless connections. A super powerful laptop might have an ultra-bright screen, blazing hard disk and blue tooth enabled.

Get The Longest Possible Battery Life

Every time you are not plugged into the wall, you need to run the least amount of options possible. Turn down the brightness on your screen if you don’t need it. Don’t run CDs or DVDs because they spin and the motor uses a ton of power.

Turn Down Laptop Settings

All recent laptops include options for limiting the amount of resources they use. If you have a modern AMD or Intel chip you can definitely turn on power saving options and many are on by default. Graphics cards are the same way.

Windows Power Options

Microsoft Windows lets users control their power usage through the control panel application named Power Options. To configure it, run the application and change the settings to maximize power use for the way you want to use your laptop.

I like to recommend that you tune your power options regularly, especially if you install new applications or start using your computer in new ways.
